How the Recent Rain May Have Damaged Your Home

The recent weather may have you worried about how the rain might affect your home. We’re experts with water damage in Orange County, and we’ll describe five ways rain might damage your home.

Damage to the roof

This is the main concern when it comes to rainfall vs. homes. The roof over your head protects you from rain, but the roof itself may need protection from the rain. If your roof has any cracked shingles or other damage you aren’t aware of, rain can enter your home and damage the attic, ceilings, walls, even electrical wiring. Most alarming is the damage that rain can do to the rafters, decking, and underlayment of the roof, which may require replacing the entire roof.

Lower level flooding

California homes almost never have basements, so you don’t have to worry about basement flooding. You do have to worry about flooding in the crawl space under your house and other lower areas. This damage can undermine the basic structure of your house and also lead to the growth of harmful mold.

Siding damage

This is a common trouble for Southern California homes because homeowners often ignore the gutters on their roofs that are designed to draw rain away from the siding. Rain can get into the gaps on a home’s siding and cause rot and decay, which often isn’t visible from the outside. As with other types of water damage, this can also lead to mold growth.

Landscape damage

Heavy rainfall can wreck the landscape around a home, especially if there isn’t sufficient storm drainage to quickly remove excess water. (Once again, Southern California homes often don’t have the best storm drainage.) One major side effect of landscape damage is trees falling over and damaging a house.

Electrical damage

Any place water can infiltrate a home, it can pose a danger to the electrical system. This may lead to a full power outage or even trigger electrical fires. (Yes, water damage ironically can create a larger danger of fire damage.)
