Summer is well on its way and with its blistering heat cloudless days, everyone is asking what they can do to stay cool. Not only that but in the middle of this drought you no doubt feel compelled to cut back on water so the wave machines and lazy rivers of a water park may be out in your book. But don’t start thinking about spending these days trapped indoors, escaping the heat. There is still so much you can do including these 10 summer events that will keep your family cool and having fun.
1. US Open of Surfing
If you love surfing, skating, or BMX than this event is for you. Located off Huntington Beach Pier, this event is free to the public and features BMX demos, skate competitions for men and women, and movie nights for the family to enjoy. July 23-July 31st.
2. Little Saigon Night Market
Escape the beating sun by visiting this exciting market open at 7pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until September 4th. Located in Asian Garden Mall in Little Saigon, OC this event is free to attend and will give you an array of authentic Vietnamese foods, goods, and tunes.
3. Ralph B. Clark Regional Park
Spend some time outdoors at Buena Parks’ regional park, open from 7am to 9pm. Hike or bike with the family and have lunch in their large, shaded picnic areas or take the kids to the Kids Fishing Clinic to teach them how to fish. Parking is $3 Monday-Friday, $7Saturday-Sunday.
4. Friday Movie Matinees
The Yorba Linda Public Library hosts Friday Move Matinees free for the family to enjoy at 2pm. Have some popcorn and a few refreshments and sit back for some time out of the sun.
5. Fullerton Arboretum
With 26-acres of green space and over 4,000 types of plants, the Fullerton Arboretum is the perfect place to relax and forget the summer heat whether you are just strolling through the gardens or wandering their museum.
6. Pacific Marine Mammal Center
This non-profit marina mammal center is the perfect place to take the kids in the summer. Here they can learn about the ocean and the centers current patients, they could even watch as rescued animals are returned to the sea.
7. Kid’s Summer Movies Series
Take the kids down to the Buena Park Mall to enjoy free movies at 10am and 12:30pm every Tuesday till August 16. While the kids are watching movies like Pan or The Peanuts Movie, you can spend some time perusing the shops.
8. Shakespeare by the Sea
For more cultured entertainment you could take the family to see a free admissions performance at one of the 20+ locations in the LA and Orange Counties. Make sure to check when a performance will happen near you during this 10 week series ending august 20.

9. La Habra Children’s Museum
Take you kids to the La Habra Children’s Museum for fun activities such as Tissue Paper Turtles, Little Picasso’s, and S.M.Art Fridays so kids can learn as they have fun with arts and crafts. $8 admission per person
10. Huntington Dog Beach
Don’t forget Fido during the summer family fun, take the family to the Huntington Dog Beach so everyone can enjoy the cool coastal waters. Meter parking.
