History & Landmarks
Costa Mesa, CA is best known for being the home to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. In fact, Costa Mesa is known as the “City of the Arts” as it is the destination of beloved museums and theaters where citizens and visitors alike go to receive a bit of culture. The idea for an arts center itself was first conceived in the late 1960s after several OC community leaders collectively decided that the time was ripe for a world-class performing site where local, regional, and established performers and companies could come and put on their shows. By the 1970s, a local family, the Segerstroms, had donated a 5-acre piece of land for the site, giving the future center a home.
The first inhabitants of the area were Native American Indians who had settled on the mesa, which was literally located on the “coastal tableland” just above Newport Beach. The original inhabitants settled on the banks of the Santa Ana River and built up their village, Lukup, thus marking the start of Costa Mesa’s long history.
As early as 1776, the area was visited by the Spanish padres who were living in the Mission San Juan Capistrano southeast of Lukup. The herdsman allowed the Capistrano cattle to graze in the Costa Mesa area, prompting the need for some type of shelter. By the early to mid-1800s, a small adobe was erected to house the men, and it still stands today as a recently restore and transformed museum.
Over time, the area grew and became more populated. Before it got its name, Costa Mesa was known as the little town of Harper as early as the 1880s. A schoolhouse, church, and even a hotel were built, but these were all destroyed after a violent storm in 1889, causing the area to revert back to a simple farming town. It wasn’t until 1920 that the town changed its name to Costa Mesa, and by this time, the area was on the rise as a booming agricultural community known for growing corn, strawberries, apples, and tomatoes.
In the summer of 1953, the city was finally incorporated and chose a City Council-Manager. To find out more, visit the Costa Mesa Historical Society website.
As a city near to the ocean, Costa Mesa is also known for its gorgeous year round climate. With sunny days, occasional rainfall, and mild, balmy temperatures, Costa Mesa has always been a popular vacation spot all year round.
